Like zinc, selenium is a cofactor for some enzymes. One enzyme of interest to those suffering from arthritis is glutathione peroxidase which breaks down peroxiases involved in the promotion of inflammation responses. Patients suffering from severe rheumatoid arthritis were found to have low levels of selenium.1 However, supplementation in one study yielded “no significant antirheumatic effect.”2 Another study found that selenium supplementation yielded no clinical benefit but demonstrated a placebo effect.3
